More to Mourn 3/23 A.L.

No matter your political views there is something incredibly sickeningly ironic about people being shot in line waiting for a vaccine in Boulder, Colorado last night.

Two weeks ago the NRA in Boulder won a case that overturned the “ban” of commonly used AR-15 rifles. According to the NRA’s website this was something to “celebrate” over.

Alas 10 families this morning aren’t celebrating but instead mourning.

It makes you wonder. Why are we so obsessed with “freedom” in the United States? There is no collective unity in this country and this shall be our demise. Watching my husband talk about his home country Norway and the national pride Norwegian’s have supporting each other is so inspiring.

As Americans we can’t even agree if we think public education is good. Let alone if people should be able to walk into a grocery store with a semi-automatic weapon!?

I saw an article that stated this morning, “They survived a global pandemic but didn’t survive a national epidemic.” Although these words are jarring even stomach splitting there is something true about that isn’t there?

The reality is that we don’t have the freedom of safety in this country.

And UNLESS we start looking out for our neighbors as much as we look out for ourselves… a grocery store errand or teaching in a school building as most of us do could be fatal.

  1. The idea of personal freedoms has, for many, superseded basic tenets of humanity, the ones that let us survive as a species in the first place–care for one another. I can’t think of a single vision of a kind, loving community, city, state, country or world that would include automatic weapons. Thoughtful post today, Abigail.
